In a time where machines, computers, gadgets, and devices have engulfed almost every aspect of our daily lives, it’s no surprise that we (Humans) have become dependent on a multitude of technological creature comforts. In many ways, it would appear that technology has completely taken over our lives. Almost, to the extent that we’ve become a generation that doesn’t know how to live without it. In essence, we’ve created a system of automation that does everything for us, including sweeping our floors.
With the recent advancements of robotics and artificial intelligence, there are still some things today that only the human variety can provide. One such thing is - ‘Fame’. Fame can only exist if people exist and have something to talk about. Even with this knowledge, some wonder "Have we automated ourselves out of a job?" The truth is, it’s too early to tell.
Since the dawn of the internet, social media has given us the perfect platform to express what we want, whenever we want, to whomever we want. It’s created the opportunity for the every-day person to acquire fame and use it to earn a living. In fact, millions of people have turned their social media accounts into live streams that generate large followings of subscribers. In the process, a niche group of individuals culminated and spawned a lucrative advertising scheme that relies on social media fame to generate wealth. It impresses upon the minds of others through creative social media tactics that convince people to make purchases and/or support a particular cause. This unique and popular profession is called “Social Media Influencer”.

A social media influencer is any person who has (or appears to have) sound knowledge in a specific niche and uses that knowledge to influence people in believing and subscribing to the same set of ideas or thoughts they are trying to propagate on social media. These individuals have the power to affect the purchasing decisions of others because of their authority, knowledge, position, or relationship with their audience. They also work as social relationship assets with which brands can collaborate to achieve their marketing objectives.
Most social media influencers consist of Bloggers, YouTubers, Podcasters, and those who only communicate via Social Posts. The platforms used range from Facebook to Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, Youtube, Snapchat, TikTok, and many more. No matter which platform used, all influencers are broken down into 4 categories based on their total number of followers. The four categories are as follows.
Mega-Influencers are individuals with an immense number of followers on their social networks. Although there are no specific rules or criteria on the boundaries between the different types of followers, a common view is that mega-influencers have more than 1 million followers on at least one social media platform. Depending on the platform, these influencers can charge a minimum of $100,000 per post. Some can even get between $250,000 to $1 Million for a post! Especially if the influencer is a Celebrity or the content is on Youtube and the influencer is in the gaming industry.
Macro-Influencers are one step down the hierarchy from mega-influencers, and in many cases are the more accessible influencers. People with followers in the range between 50,000 and 1 million followers on a social network are macro-influencers. They tend to earn between $10,000 and $25,000 per post.
This group tends to consists of two types of people. They are either B-grade celebrities or successful online experts, who have built up more significant followings than the typical micro-influencers. These types of influencers tend to be more useful for firms engaging in influencer marketing. However, it is also worth mentioning that this level of influencing contains the most fraud, with many influencers purchasing followers and using bots to create fake accounts.
Micro-influencers are ordinary everyday people who have become known for their knowledge about a particular niche. As such, they have usually gained a sizable social media following amongst devotees of that niche. Although views differ, many consider micro-influencers as having between 1,000 and 50,000 followers on a single social platform. At a time, they earned a few hundred bucks per post, but today, they get a minimum of a few thousand dollars per post. This can translate to a salary between $40,000 to $100,000 per year.
The last type of influencer is called a Nano-Influencer. These individuals only have a small number of followers, but they tend to be experts in an esoteric or highly specialized field. Some believe nano-influencers are like a small dog with a big bite. In many cases, they have fewer than 1,000 followers. Nevertheless, these individuals are usually keen and interested followers, willing to engage with the nano-influencer, and listen to his/her opinions. They can earn between $30,000 and $60,000 a year.
The nature of typical everyday jobs is changing. As the world grows, the social media population grows with it. Social Media influencers are popping up everywhere and sharing their opinions with everyone. It seems we’ve reached a point in history where there is no limit to the amount of influence or popularity one can attain. What is even more interesting about this field is that it doesn’t require a college education. All that is required of you is niche content, and of course the all-important following. No matter what level of influencer, you can succeed. Even micro-influencers are becoming more famous. Some have risen from virtual obscurity to being nearly as well known as traditional celebrities. Therefore, if you are passionate about a particular niche and can influence people to believe and subscribe to the same set of ideas or thoughts you are trying to propagate, then maybe a Social Media Influencer could be the right job for you.
